The Robin - Bajeskwartier
Amsterdam is getting a new part of the city: the Bajeskwartier. An area with a history. The Bajeskwartier will become a circular, sustainable, and healthy neighborhood. An exceptional place that adds something new to Amsterdam: high-density urban living in a green setting, where you can stroll through a landscape with around seventy gardens. The wall of the former prison still stands mostly intact and will soon serve as a plant and climbing wall.
Location
The Bajeskwartier is located within the ring in the Overamstel area of Amsterdam-East, between the Amstelkwartier and the Weespertrekvaart. In the Bajeskwartier itself or the immediate surroundings, you’ll find various restaurants. By bike, you’ll reach Dam Square in no time. The metro from the nearby Spaklerweg station takes you to Amstel Station in two minutes. In less than 5 minutes by car, you can get to the A10, A2, or A4 highways. Everything is within easy reach: the city center, Zuidas, Science Park, the popular Amstelstrand, or the green outskirts of the Amstelscheg.
Sustainability
The Bajeskwartier is sustainable, circular, and energy-neutral. The homes are highly insulated. The so-called mobility hub encourages the use of shared transportation: through a convenient app, you can use sustainable vehicles such as (electric) cargo bikes, e-bikes, scooters, and electric shared cars. The Robin is connected to the collective heat and cold sources (WKO sources) provided by the ESCO party. Solar panels on the rooftop garden of the ninth floor generate energy for the WKO sources. Rainwater is collected on the roofs and beneath the ground floor to reduce surface water load and to irrigate the rooftop gardens.
Architecture
The Robin is a real eye-catcher by the renowned Barcode Architects. Its height is inspired by the shape of the original prison tower; at a lower level, a landscape of rooftop gardens surrounds it, with the plinth remaining open. The overall result resembles a ballerina. Outside, the façades glow golden yellow in the sun, but the real treasure lies inside: the six-story Atrium, a spacious entrance hall with red accents, serving as a warm, beating heart. Here, there’s space for exhibitions or public events.
Shared Rooftop Gardens
In addition to the private balcony, there are exclusive green rooftop gardens and terraces on the fifth, seventh, and ninth floors for residents to enjoy the rooftop greenery and the magnificent view in this unique urban setting. These rooftop terraces are oriented towards the morning or evening sun, offering a breathtaking view of Amsterdam.
Landscape
Within Bajeskwartier, you live in a high-quality semi-public area with about 68 gardens. There is plenty of greenery and water, accessible to residents via bike and pedestrian paths. It’s a neighborhood without cars in sight! Cars are directed to the underground parking garage if necessary. The central pedestrian route, known as the “Kalverstraat” in prison jargon, runs through the greenery of the Bajeskwartier and connects all the districts. The landscape plan was designed by Lola Landscape Architects. A management association will be established for area maintenance, and a management plan will follow.
Amenities
The Robin offers a daycare with a private city garden where children can safely play outside. Additionally, a service center will be available where residents can address any concerns. The building also provides access to the underground parking garage of the Bajeskwartier, where you can rent a parking spot. This is also where the shared transportation of the mobility hub can be found.
